North Star Transload Facility

East Fairview, North Dakota

SRF was retained by NorthStar Transloading to complete rail, roadway and site planning and design on a 400-acre site in western North Dakota. Upon completion the project is expected to draw more than 3,400 trips per day, consisting primarily of trucks, and operate 24-hours a day/seven days a week. The facility will accommodate up to three unit trains per 24-hour period in addition to processing manifest trains. SRF’s site planning and design services included the following components:

  • Crude oil truck unloading facility that can accommodate more than 650 trucks per day
  • Crude oil pipeline and tank farm
  • High-speed crude oil train loading facility that can process up to two unit trains per day
  • Two sand loading and unloading facilities that can accommodate one unit train per day and truck loading and unloading
  • Two proppant loading and unloading facilities that can accommodate one unit train per day and truck loading and unloading
  • Two transloading areas consisting of rail/truck interaction areas and warehouses
  • Warehouses and laydown yards accessible by rail and trucks
  • Adjacent and internal public roadway design and access
  • VISSIM 3D modeling of train/truck interactions, and operations through all of the site facilities
  • Operations analysis of train/truck interactions through all of the site facilities
  • Site design and modelling to efficiently design interactions between rail, roads, and facilities
  • 140,000 linear feet of rail track site planning and design
  • Utility analysis, planning and design including sewer, water, stormwater and large electrical
  • Planning and design of a wayfinding system to guide vehicular traffic through this complex site
