Morton County Future Land Use Plan

Morton County, North Dakota

SRF Consulting Group partnered with Morton County and the Bismarck-Mandan Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to develop a future land use plan in northeast Morton County. The future land use plan was an update to the MPO’s 2007 plan and  informed updates to the metropolitan travel demand model and Long Range Transportation Plan. The land use plan became a key park of Morton County’s current Comprehensive Plan update effort.

The plan development process consisted of three phases 1) Land Use Suitability Analysis, 2) Future Land Use Alternatives, and 3) Preferred Future Land Use Plan. The Land Use Suitability Analysis examined the existing conditions of the study area in order to identify areas where opportunities or limitations for growth are located. Population, housing, and employment projections were completed to gain a reasonable prediction of the scale of future growth.

In addition to updating the Future Land Use Plan, this project also examined the county’s zoning districts to ensure practical implementation of the plan.
