Fire Station No. 3 Site Design in Bloomington, MN

To replace its outdated facility, the City of Bloomington completed a relocation study and acquired a new site for Fire Station No. 3. The goal was to improve access, modernize facilities, and better serve the community’s emergency response needs. SRF collaborated with the project architect, Wendel, to support civil engineering and design for the site.

Civil Engineering and Site Design

SRF provided site planning, grading, utilities, stormwater management, and landscape architecture services. Each discipline contributed to a buildable and resilient design that supports both day-to-day operations and long-term site sustainability.

Navigating Design Constraints

The project involved several engineering and environmental challenges, including steep driveway grades, nearby airport height restrictions, and highly permeable soils. SRF delivered tailored stormwater solutions, integrated Old Shakopee Road street and trail improvements, and ensured compatibility with aviation-related site limitations.

Community Engagement and Placemaking

Public involvement was a central part of the planning process. SRF facilitated creative placemaking and engagement activities that shaped the site plan and helped reflect neighborhood values.

Facility Features and Opening

Opened in 2020 at 2301 East 86th Street, the new Fire Station No. 3 replaced the former facility located at East 86th Street and 22nd Avenue. Designed to meet modern operational needs, the station features expanded living quarters, a training mezzanine, dedicated fitness space, offices, and multipurpose rooms to support both staff operations and public safety training.
