Improving Safety and Multimodal Connectivity
The Plymouth Avenue North roadway reconstruction enhanced safety, accessibility, and multimodal connections along the corridor between Xerxes and Penn Avenues in Minneapolis. Previously a two-lane street with on-street bike lanes and narrow boulevards, the corridor was redesigned to prioritize pedestrian and cyclist safety while maintaining vehicle access.
SRF partnered with the City of Minneapolis to develop a comprehensive roadway design that:
- Narrowed traffic lanes to encourage safer driving speeds.
- Added curb extensions and bump-outs to create wider boulevard spaces.
- Designed a protected bikeway behind the curb in both directions.
- Integrated raised crossings at all intersections to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety.
- Installed median refuge islands and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) to enhance pedestrian visibility at crossings.
- Collaborated with Metro Transit to improve bus stop facilities and operations along the corridor.
By enhancing pedestrian, bicycle, and transit infrastructure, the Plymouth Avenue North roadway reconstruction supports safer, more efficient multimodal travel in North Minneapolis.
