Omaha Dodge Street Bus Rapid Transit Design

SRF supported Omaha Metro Transit in advancing the Dodge Street Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, an 11-mile corridor funded through a TIGER grant. The line connects major destinations including Westroads Transit Center, the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and downtown Omaha, promoting multimodal mobility along the city’s most active arterial.

The BRT route features 27 stations operating in mixed traffic, with transit signal priority and queue jump lanes to improve reliability and shorten travel times. Service runs every 10 minutes during peak periods and every 20 minutes off-peak.

Transit Station Design and ADA Compliance

As part of the consultant team, SRF provided site design and ADA-compliant solutions for each station. The corridor’s limited right-of-way prompted SRF to collaborate closely with the station architect to develop space-efficient configurations that retained all essential amenities. These designs supported pedestrian flow and ensured accessibility without compromising operational goals.

Stakeholder Outreach and Public Engagement

SRF developed and led the public engagement, working closely with Metro Transit and local stakeholders. The outreach strategy was designed to engage a diverse mix of future riders, existing transit users, corridor businesses, residents, and civic leaders. Tactics included pop-up meetings at station sites, online outreach, stakeholder committee coordination, and presentations to city officials and neighborhood groups.

Project Controls and FTA Coordination

To meet Federal Transit Administration (FTA) requirements, SRF’s Project Controls team managed a master schedule encompassing five construction bid packages, right-of-way acquisition milestones, and vehicle procurement timelines. This coordination helped keep the project aligned with funding and delivery expectations.

Through transit planning, accessible station design, and inclusive engagement, SRF helped position Metro Transit for long-term success in delivering high-frequency, reliable BRT service to the Omaha community.
