Bus Rapid Transit Design and Corridor Integration
The METRO Orange Line is a 17-mile highway bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor running along I-35W, connecting Minneapolis, Richfield, Bloomington, and Burnsville. Designed to deliver all-day, frequent, and bidirectional service with competitive travel times, the Orange Line enhances transit access for thousands of daily riders.
Transit Corridor Design and Engineering
As a consultant partner to Metro Transit, SRF provided comprehensive design and engineering services. Responsibilities included developing 30%, 60%, and 90% design plans, as well as full construction drawings, bid packages, and project manuals for roadway, bridge, and station components. SRF also led transit signal planning, preparing signal revision and transit signal priority (TSP) plans, and overseeing signal programming, testing, and commissioning.
Construction Administration and Federal Support
During construction, SRF supported the Metropolitan Council by reviewing vendor submittals, managing change orders, and coordinating field modifications to ensure conformance with design documents. The team also assisted Metro Transit with the Federal Transit Administration’s Small Starts application, providing technical support for the Documented Categorical Exclusion and related public engagement efforts.
