The Tettegouche State Park Visitor Center and Rest Area on the north shore of Lake Superior provides a new gateway entry experience for this scenic landmark state park facility. SRF collaborated with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota Department of Transportation to create an updated main entrance for the park that directs visitors to a lodge-style facility where they enjoy panoramic views of Lake Superior. Adjacent patio areas and walkways transition visitors to a trailhead system, which provides access to the popular Shovel Point overlook and Baptism River shoreline.
Surrounding parking lot facilities were sited and graded to minimize impacts on existing topography, and site and stormwater runoff is retained and treated before entering sensitive natural drainage-ways. Native plant material and seed mixes are integrated throughout the site to provide year round visual interest and blend with the surrounding landscape.
Site amenities designed by the SRF team included:
- Rest area and visitor center parking areas
- New pedestrian walk and bike trail circulation
- Outdoor fireplace and patio seating area
- Picnic facilities
- Overlooks
- Entry monument signage
- Amphitheatre area
