North Carolina A&T State University, the largest of the United States’ Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), has experienced significant growth in recent years. Located just east of downtown Greensboro, North Carolina, the university has expanded its campus with new academic buildings, residence halls, and student life facilities to support its growing population.
As the campus footprint and enrollment increased, NC A&T’s Parking and Transportation Services faced growing challenges, including traffic congestion, limited parking availability, and concerns around pedestrian safety. In response, and as part of the university’s broader commitment to sustainability, accessibility, and student experience, the decision was made to reimagine the role of the Aggie Shuttle system in meeting the campus’s evolving mobility needs.
A Flexible, Student-Centered Transit Strategy
SRF was selected to lead the planning effort, tasked with creating a comprehensive campus transit plan that would modernize shuttle operations and better serve students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The study prioritized improving travel times, increasing reliability, and making the system easier to navigate, all while working within financial constraints.
SRF’s Transit team constructed detailed operating scenarios and developed optimized schedules, route patterns, and stop locations. The recommendations allow shuttle services to expand alongside campus development, offering flexibility to adapt.
Delivering Results Through Strategic Transit Planning
The final plan significantly improved system performance by doubling and even tripling service frequency in some areas while reducing operating costs. These enhancements were designed to meet the unique needs of a diverse university population and make daily campus life more efficient.
Whether students are catching an early lecture, attending a late-night event, or making a quick trip across campus, the redesigned shuttle system provides a simple, safe, and reliable transportation experience that supports NC A&T’s continued growth and commitment to excellence.
