SRF has collaborated with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to advance statewide connected vehicle (CV) technology by providing strategic planning, stakeholder coordination, and funding guidance. This work aims to improve transportation safety, mobility, and system efficiency through the deployment of vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication systems.
Advancing Connected Vehicle Technology Through Stakeholder Collaboration and Funding Proposals
SRF supported MnDOT’s efforts by preparing several federal funding proposals to launch pilot deployments across the state. The team led an extensive public outreach initiative, meeting with public and private sector stakeholders to identify deployment priorities aligned with Minnesota’s infrastructure needs. Applications were assessed based on cost, feasibility, and their ability to meet safety and operational goals.
One of the most pressing needs identified was improving snow and ice operations—a key concern for MnDOT’s winter maintenance program. SRF collaborated with stakeholders to prioritize CV applications that could enhance operational efficiency and safety in these conditions.
Improving Snow and Ice Operations with Traffic Signal Priority Systems
SRF worked with MnDOT to design a signal priority system using Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC), aimed at minimizing delays for snow plows at traffic signals and ramp meters. The system allows plows to request extended green phases, helping them maintain formation and reduce idle time. This approach supports gang plowing operations by giving the right-most plow signal priority, improving traffic flow and safety during severe weather events.
SRF continues to provide program management services as MnDOT prototypes, designs, and deploys its CV applications. The team’s deep expertise in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which integrate communication, control, and information processing technologies to improve transportation outcomes, has played a central role in guiding MnDOT’s CV strategy and deployment readiness.
