I-35W Bridge Design-Build Oversight

With the collapse of the I-35W Bridge over the Mississippi River, a vital transportation artery was closed in the Twin Cities metro area. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) embarked on an aggressive plan to reconstruct the bridge and reopen this important facility by the end of 2008. SRF and Parsons were selected by MnDOT to provide contract administration, design review services, construction inspection and materials compliance.

SRF assembled a team to provide design review services for all phases of the project, including inspection personnel, quality assurance and verification personnel, claim management, and other support staff. All reviews were conducted to ensure that designs met the criteria of the RFP and MnDOT standards.

Due to the aggressive schedule (construction 24/7) of the Design-Build Contractor, SRF had to be flexible in response to changes in staff needs. SRF was able to respond to all requests quickly with qualified personnel, providing over 30 individuals on site during peak staffing requirements.

Team members met regularly with MnDOT and Design-Build Contractor staff to coordinate activities, and develop solutions to design and construction challenges. The bridge was open to traffic in less than one year from the selection of the Design-Build Contractor.
