US 52/IA 64 Bridge Replacement over the Mississippi River Overflow Value Engineering

SRF teamed with Kraemer North America on a value engineering effort for the redesign of the deck and pier substructure for the bridge replacement of US 52/IA 64 over Mississippi River Overflow. The original replacement structure was a four-span 376 foot by 40 foot bridge that used accelerated bridge construction (ABC) methods and drilled shaft foundations for the piers constructed outside the footprint of the existing bridge prior to the demolition. SRF provided value engineering that included the design and detailing of a conventional cast-in-place deck and lowering of the precast, post-tensioned pier cap. The lowering of the pier cap enabled pier construction and post-tensioning prior to demolition of the existing bridge which helped Kraemer North America to mitigate some of the schedule risk as the pier construction could be performed prior to the critical ABC closure window.
