The Hy-Vee Fitchburg Grocery Store is an 8-acre development located on a former quarry site. As the design engineer, SRF worked closely with Hy-Vee and the City of Fitchburg to conduct a traffic impact analysis, mitigate traffic impacts, and develop infrastructure plans to support an 85,000+ square-foot grocery store.
The site includes drive-up service, an outdoor sales area, multiple loading and truck access points, and parking for over 400 vehicles, with accommodations for non-motorized transportation. Site challenges included shallow bedrock, significant grade changes, and rigorous stormwater management requirements.
SRF’s solutions included:
- Underground stormwater BMPs to remove total suspended solids, oil, and grease, while meeting volume control requirements
- Final design of a terraced retaining wall system to maximize usable space and manage steep slopes
- Landscape design to enhance the site’s visual appeal and integrate with surrounding development
The result is a fully integrated grocery store site that balances functionality, environmental compliance, and community needs.
