At SRF, our mission is to create lasting solutions that strengthen communities. However, we recognize that many of the vibrant communities we serve face significant challenges—none more complex or pressing than homelessness.
In the latest episode of Unboxed: The SRF Podcast, we explore how innovative partnerships and a “whole-person” approach are changing lives in the Twin Cities and beyond.
Inside the Episode
Host Nick Busse sits down with SRF President and CEO Todd Polum and Kelly Matter, President and CEO of Avivo. Avivo is a leading nonprofit that serves more than 11,000 individuals each year, helping them achieve recovery, housing stability, and economic advancement.

A Radical Welcome: The Avivo Way
Kelly Matter shares the philosophy behind Avivo’s success, rooted in a “radical welcome” and deep respect for human dignity. One of their most unique solutions is Avivo Village, the first indoor tiny home community of its kind in the country.
By providing a low-barrier shelter that welcomes “people, pets, and possessions,” Avivo creates a safe space where individuals can transition from the streets to permanent housing and, eventually, back into the workforce.
“When we have people that are struggling and living on the streets, that does not reflect a healthy community.” — Todd Polum, SRF President & CEO
Why It Matters to SRF
For SRF, supporting organizations like Avivo is a direct extension of our core values: Integrity, Solutions, and Community. Todd discusses why it is a moral responsibility for the business community to contribute to these solutions, whether through board leadership, financial support, or creating career pathways for Avivo graduates.
