Data-Driven Visualization and 4D Civil Information Management

SRF is pleased to announce the addition of industry-respected expert Rick Lovel to our team. As SRF’s Chief Technologist, Rick is integrating Civil Information Management (CIM) and project lifecycle Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) into SRF’s core services. He is also expanding SRF’s existing Geographic Information System (GIS) and visualization services in addition to providing data-driven visualization products that create highly effective communication deliverables for our clients and their stakeholders.

In an industry noted for rapidly evolving technology, Rick identifies value and facilitates technology adoption while also focusing on the often over-looked human component of how project teams interact with each other and stakeholders. Increasing project communication and transparency through more collaborative processes, including embedded visualization, shortens project durations, reduces human error, and saves project contingency funds. Rick has delivered visualization solutions to more than 40 DOTs as well as federal, state, county, and municipal agencies around the U.S.

“As a trusted advisor, I help bring clarity and increase understanding of the unknowns for our clients to solve their real-world problems. By deploying proven right-sized technology solutions, we realize short-term results in addition to providing incremental return on investment over time for our clients,” said Rick Lovel

A national 3D/4D/5D expert, Rick has provided animations and 4D construction and maintenance of traffic (MOT) phasing rehearsals for iconic projects such as the St. Croix River Crossing in Minnesota, Bonner Bridge in North Carolina, Tappan Zee Bridge in New York, Council Bluffs Interchange System in Iowa, and the Fort Lauderdale Airport in Florida. Through his work in Florida, the client realized $5 million in savings based upon a $50,000 investment in 4D, cutting six months from the project schedule.

Rick is a member of the Transportation Research Board Visualization in Transportation and Civil Integrated Management Subcommittees. He has been featured in books such as “Geospatial Matters: Exploring the Implications of a Digital Earth,” trade journals such as World Pipeline, ESRI’s ArcUser, and PBS’ NOVA website.

A sampling of Rick’s wide experience includes:

  • Highway and rail animations throughout the U.S. and Canada
  • 3D airspace analysis for the federal government in the Mariana Islands
  • Environmental Impact Statement and visualization support to oil and gas clients in Alaska
  • Interactive, virtual, and augmented reality 3D environments for mining and dam projects
  • Modeling/animation of five military bases for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

SRF is a 100% employee owned company. Our active company principals lead a practice of knowledgeable, creative professionals who are driven by the desire to be the best in their field and to help clients create vibrant, livable communities and sustainable transportation systems.
