Sauk Rapids Regional Bridge (CSAH 1) Over the Mississippi River

Sauk Rapids & Saint Cloud, Minnesota

The City of Sauk Rapids, in conjunction with Stearns and Benton Counties, City of Saint Cloud, Le Sauk Township, Saint Cloud APO, MnDOT, and BNSF Railway Company, decided to construct a new bridge over the Mississippi River to replace the existing two-lane bridge built in 1948. The bridge spans the Mississippi River and provides grade separation over BNSF and a pedestrian helix ramp to Lions Park. The project also includes the reconstruction and realignment of approximately 1,800 feet of Benton Drive South from 1st Street South to 4th Street North as a four-lane divided roadway.

SRF worked closely with affected agencies to complete this project and assisted the City with the railroad agreement. As part of the project, SRF prepared a bridge type study report to determine the most feasible type and spans for the location. After the study was completed, SRF prepared preliminary and final bridge plans and contract documents for bidding purposes. This project was extremely complex due to the multiple-agency involvement and required approval process. Additionally, challenging site conditions made plan preparation and construction difficult.
