I-75 North Region ITS Design

Grayling to Mackinaw City, Michigan

SRF was part of the team that designed ITS deployments along the I-75 corridor from Grayling to Mackinaw City, in the North Region.  SRF’s role in the project included design of mini-Road/Weather Information Systems (RWIS), three Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and five Closed Circuit Television (CCTV).  SRF led the field survey and site selection activities, prepared base plans, and conducted the initial stakeholder meeting for these project elements.

The mini-RWIS system warns motorists of hazardous road conditions through wireless activation of “Bridge May Be Icy” signs with solar beacons whenever icing conditions are detected.  SRF prepared a concept of operations document to describe the operation of the system.

SRF’s role in the project also included reviewing and amending existing ITS documentation to reflect the new deployments, including the regional ITS architecture and concept of operations. The project complements prior ITS deployments along the I-75 corridor.
