TCF Bank Stadium Infrastructure

Minneapolis, Minnesota

The University of Minnesota’s new 50,000-seat TCF Bank Stadium is the first LEED Certified football stadium in the country. LEED Silver status was awarded to the stadium for its demonstration of sustainability in its design. SRF worked with the University and their architect, HOK Sport, to design and construct the site’s infrastructure, including streets, parking lots, and streetscape elements. Unique elements of our work include the following:

After grain elevators on the site were demolished, the concrete was recycled as aggregate base for the new parking lots.
As part of the overall stormwater management plan, runoff from hard surfaces is treated using bioretention basins, hydrodynamic separators, a media filtration system, pervious concrete, and an underground detention/subsurface irrigation system.
At 75 acres, this is the largest single tract of land in Minneapolis where stormwater is treated for both quality and quantity. Peak stormwater discharge rates were controlled to meet those of the predevelopment hydrologic condition.
An innovative diversion system allows rainwater from the seating areas to be treated with the stormwater system, while directing detergent-laden wash water from cleaning operations into the sanitary sewers.

Opened for the 2009 football season, the University of Minnesota celebrated an all-around victory: not only do the Gophers have a new long-term home, but the University has also demonstrated that a stadium can positively impact a site and its neighbors.

Minnesota Vikings Stadium – Metrodome Next

Minneapolis, Minnesota

As part of its evaluation of the Metrodome site for a new multi-purpose NFL stadium and entertainment facility, the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission (MSFC) selected SRF to develop a technical report. Following preparation of the report, SRF was part of a multidiscipline team chosen to further investigate the needs of a new stadium and develop schematic drawings for the necessary improvements. SRF provided technical support for site design, transportation systems, infrastructure adequacy, parking supply analysis, and minor review of stormwater management needs of the redevelopment of the site for a 65,000-seat facility.

A planning level report and schematic design was developed that addressed:

Freeway, local-street, and Light Rail Transit (LRT) access to the site
Parking systems around the area
Contemplated changes to transportation and parking near the Metrodome site
Conflicting utilities and potential solutions for stormwater management
Contemplated streets and right of way vacation

Parade Stadium Athletic Field Complex

Minneapolis, Minnesota

SRF worked with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to develop a premier soccer and football stadium facility within the existing Parade Athletic Field Complex in downtown Minneapolis. Phase one site improvements included the installation of a synthetic turf field to accommodate football and soccer, a bleacher system for spectators, and lighting. The field area configuration meets all standards for world cup soccer play and is currently being utilized by local college soccer clubs, youth, and adult intramural sports teams. Phase one improvements were completed in 2007.

Phase two improvements will include installation of a new parking lot facility on the north end of the field, a concession facility, and the addition of a second natural turf practice field. Future phases will include the installation of a grandstand on the east side of the field, and building expansion of the parade ice arena facility to accommodate indoor basketball and tennis courts.
